QUESTIONS THAT CAN HELP YOU DECIDE ON A SWIM GROUP
NEW SWIMMER
If the swimmer has never swam on a USA-Swimming swim team before, then use the following questions to determine which practice group he/she should be in:
1) How old is your child?
a) 8 and under – go to question 2
b) 9 or 10 – go to question 4
c) 11 or 12 – go to question 5
d) 13 or older – go to question 6
2) Can your child swim the length of the pool unassisted?
a) Yes – go to question 4
b) No – go to question 3
3) Can your child be trusted in the shallow end of the pool if there is no adult in the pool with them (that is
supervised by an adult not physically in the water with them)?
a) Yes – Discovery group
b) No – Please talk to coach
4) Can your child swim the pool length in all 4 competitive strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, front crawl)?
a) Yes – Imagination Group
b) No – Exploration Group
5) Can your child swim 50 yards (down and back) in all 4 competitive strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, front crawl)?
a) Yes – Challenge group
b) No – Imagination group
6) Does your child attend or will be attending the Waunakee High School?
a) Yes – see question 7
b) No – see question 7
7) Can your child swim 50 yards (down and back) in all 4 competitive strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle)?
a) Yes – Performance group
b) No – Challenge Group
