The Waunakee Wave Board of Directors is pleased to announce Beth Botsford as the Head Coach of the Waunakee Wave Swim Team, effective July 1, 2014.
Coach Beth brings the Wave over 20 years of experience and success both in and out of the pool. Prior to joining the Waunakee Wave, Beth was most recently an Assistant Coach for the University of Wisconsin Badgers where she oversaw both women's and men's squads that earned five new school records in 2013-14. She also brings an unparalleled ability to teach proper stroke technique which is the key to injury prevention and lifelong enjoyment of the sport.
Coach Beth has chosen to work for the Wave because of our team values and organizational excellence, and a strong desire to rejoin club swimming. Beth brings to the Wave an enthusiasm about sport education for both parents and swimmers. She wants to demonstrate to you, the parents, her philosophy of club swimming, and she wants to teach your kids to love the sport as she does, and have them learn valuable life lessons along the way.
While she herself is a star athlete, Beth states that swimmers, of any ability, deserve to have excellent coaching, and that goals of every size will be established and honored.
Coach Beth has had a prestigious career in the pool. In 1996 at the age of 14, she earned a spot on the United States Olympic team after placing first in the 200-meter backstroke and second in the 100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic trials. That summer during the XXVI Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga., she swam to two gold medals including the 100-meter backstroke and the 4x100 medley relay.
Following a successful Olympic experience, Beth continued to race for the next 10 years, earning six national championship titles. She competed for the University of Arizona from 1999-2003, earning 16 first team All-American honors during her four years of collegiate competition.
After retiring from competitive swimming, Beth began teaching stroke clinics and demonstrations around the world, traveling as far as Alaska and Japan. She eventually settled in Wisconsin where she founded a swim school for area children.
